Agreement on Founding First Public-private Business School

Germany’s first business school for global management is under way: Today (20 October), the Academic Under-Secretary of State for the Land of Schleswig-Holstein, Jost de Jager, and the former President of the German Employers’ Associations, Klaus Murmann, signed a cooperation agreement founding the “Murmann School of Global Management and Economics”.

This project was made possible by Murmann’s offer to participate in a facility for further education by investing his own funds, totalling 3.5 million euros (500,000 euros annually for seven years). Apart from Murmann, the Land of Schleswig-Holstein will participate for seven years (500,000 euros) as well as the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU) with its economists (200,000 euros) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (50,000 euros). The key target group consists of post-graduate students with professional experience who wish to obtain in-depth knowledge for management positions in internationally active companies or organisations.

The business school will finance itself by means of school fees. The first students will enrol in the autumn of 2007; most of them will be sent by their companies. The cooperation agreement stipulates that the Murmann School will be set up as a not-for-profit GmbH [Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, a German private limited company]. A Scientific Advisory Board will be set up, which is to be chaired by the President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. Furthermore, the cooperation agreement defines the financial amounts to be paid by the participating partners and regulates the details for tenure procedures.

Apart from Murmann and de Jager, the cooperation agreement was also signed by the President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), Professor Dennis Snower, as well as the Vice-Chancellor of the CAU, Professor Thomas Bauer, and the Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Sciences, Professor Peter Nippel.

“By linking global management to academic questions regarding global economy, we expect the Murmann School to increase the effect here in northern Germany as a centre for science and research,” said the Academic Under-Secretary of State, de Jager. By including the nationally and internationally recognised economic competences at the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel (CAU) and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW), an exceptional centre for teaching and research will be created in the field of global economy which, apart from offering courses in further education, will also provide courses at different levels of intensity for which certificates can be awarded. The key target group for courses in further education will be post-graduate students with and without professional experience who wish to obtain in-depth knowledge for management positions in multinational companies or international organisations. De Jager said, “I am very confident that our excellent programs for further education will be widely accepted.”
