Renowned course of studies under one roof: cooperation between Murmann School and Kiel Institute for the World Economy
10 July 2007
The Advanced Studies Program in International Economic Policy Research run by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy is highly renowned. Since 1984, 500 economists from around the world have taken part in this high-quality training in economic research and economic policy. For the first time, this year's program will be carried out jointly by the Murmann School of Global Management and Economics and the previously responsible institution, the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.
"We are convinced that this cooperation with the Murmann School will increase the rating of the Advanced Studies Program," said Dennis J. Snower, President of the Kiel Institute for the World Economy. " The Murmann School will work at the interface between business administration and economics. The knowledge gained from this new approach will be very important for economists in international organisations, ministries, research institutes, at universities and in globally active corporations." Many of the former participants work today in management positions all around the world. The course is in great demand: approx. 100 people apply every year for one of the 25 places.
"The Murmann School is proud to start off with this internationally recognised course," Klaus Murmann commented on the cooperation. "In this way, we can integrate an existing network of excellent lecturers and alumni in our work at the Murmann School, and there will be many synergy effects."
Participants in the program will study, do research and reside in House Weltclub, the seat of the Murmann School since June. "The proximity to the Institute and the world's largest economic library, as well as living directly on the Firth of Kiel provides the optimum framework for an intensive course of study. Many former participants are still raving about it today," said Harmen Lehment, academic head of the Advanced Studies Program for the past 23 years.
In the autumn of 2006, Klaus Murmann, entrepreneur and Honorary President of the Confederation of German Employers' Associations (BDA), and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy entered into a public-private partnership with the Christian-Albrechts-University Kiel to found the Murmann School of Global Management and Economics. Using a novel approach, questions on international management and global economy are linked to one another in teaching and research. Apart from the above mentioned Advanced Studies Program in International Economic Policy Research, the School offers two-day executive courses that begin this autumn. Renowned professors will instruct executives in the latest knowledge and methods on special topics concerning global management. A one-year Master's degree course on Global Management and Economics will begin in the autumn of 2008.
